Together with the Commission for Environment of the Commune of Niederanven, we are pleased to invite you to participate in the events and activities planned as part of the European Mobility Week, which will take place between 16 and 22 September 2024.
Working together towards the goal: Fewer CO2 emissions thanks to fewer km driven!
As part of European Mobility Week, the Commission for Environment will shortly present the alternatives to the car available in the Commune of Niederanven.
Compared with other EU countries, Luxembourg has one of the highest per capita CO2 emissions. Everyone can help to reduce them! But how can we help to reduce our CO2 emissions on a daily basis? Here are a few examples:
Example 1):
- By taking the bus for a week to go to work in the city (15 km), I reduce my CO2 emissions by 31 kg
- By carpooling for a week to work (35 km), I reduce my CO2 emissions by 71 kg
- By taking the children to school (+/-3 km) by bus in the morning and at lunchtime on the same day, I reduce my CO2 emissions by 2.6 kg
- If I do my shopping at the shopping centre (+/-3 km) by bike, I reduce my CO2 emissions by 1.3 kg
The reduction in CO2 emissions has been calculated using the average value for mid-range diesel and petrol vehicles.
Example 2):
Under the motto ‘less car - more fun’, let's make the most of Mobility Week and take the first step!

Search on HOPLR for people who share your way to work or school and form a driving community.
With carpooling you have company, save costs, and protect our environment.
Ride the bike to work! The Luxembourg-Echternach cycle path provides an ideal link between Niederanven and Luxembourg City.
Avoid traffic jams, take your bike!
Do you work in Kirchberg? Why not ride a bike to go to the office? The CO2 emissions for a mid-range car are 250g of CO2 per km in city traffic. So for a 15 km round trip, you generate more than 3.75 kg of CO2. At rush hour, taking the bike doesn't take much longer than the car, and reduces greenhouse gas emissions to zero!
The Luxembourg-Echternach cycle path passes through the commune of Niederanven and is close to all the towns in the commune: Ernster, Hostert, Niederanven, Oberanven, Rameldange, Senningen and Senningerberg! It's perfectly suited to cyclists, providing a safe link between the capital's network of cycle paths and Niederanven.
Did you know?
The Luxembourg-Niederanven cycle path largely follows the old route of the narrow-gauge railway that linked Luxembourg station to Echternach station, passing through Eich, Dommeldange, Senningen, Hostert and Ernster before continuing north-eastwards to the picturesque Mullerthal and Echternach region. Luxembourgers were so fond of this little steam train that they gave it a nickname, the "Charly".
Don't have a bike yet? Try Vel'OH, the bike hire network set up by the capital. The Commune is committed to this scheme and has set up 5 hiring points:
- Rue d'Ernster, Oberanven
- Charly's Gare, Hostert
- Water tower, Senningerberg
- Complex ''Am Sand'', Niederanven
- Rue Laach, Niederanven
Not sure if cycling is for you? Hire a Vel'OH without a season ticket for a day.
Pro tip:
The Mobilitéit.lu application can also be used to plan your journeys by bike. It includes all the Luxembourg cycle paths in the route calculations and will give you a reliable estimate of your arrival time. What's more, you can easily compare cycle journeys with public transport journeys!
The application takes account of real-time traffic. Here are some examples of cycling routes provided by this application:
- Charlys Gare, Hostert - rue Weicker, Luxembourg, 8.5 km, 40 minutes
- European Parliament - rue Laach, Niederanven, 9.7 km, 41 minutes
- Charlys Statioun, Senningerberg - Hôpital du Kirchberg, 4.9 km, 16 minutes
